Description

The Granger Homestead. After resigning his Postmaster General office, under Thomas Jefferson, Gideon Granger moved to Canandaigua and resolved to have a homestead built that would be "unrivaled in all the nation". This three-story Federal-style wood frame structure is composed of two sections, a main block with central hall plan which was constructed in 1816 and a north wing added in 1860. The architect of the house is unknown. The original structure had four rooms on both the first and second floors, each with a fireplace. For 30 years, from 1876-1906, the Granger Place School, a private college preparatory school for young ladies, occupied the old homestead and the classroom wing which was at the right rear of the building. The wing was later moved to the rear of the property and houses the Carriage Museum today. The Granger Family lived at the Homestead until the death of Antoinette Granger (granddaughter), the last of the Granger Family in 1930. The homestead faced impending demolition until local judge, Joseph Cribb, spearheaded a campaign to save it. He formed the Granger Homestead Society in 1946. The Society later purchased the Granger Homestead with the purpose of maintaining and operating the historic home as a house museum as the Will of Antoinette Granger intended. Located at 295 North Main Street in Canandaigua, NY. (Can/185)
